According to the New York City Mayor's Office of Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (M/WBE), the office was "created to address historic disparities in City contracting and provide minority and women entrepreneurs increased opportunities to do business with the City."
Obtaining your M/WBE certification is the first step toward gaining greater access to New York City (and State, should you choose to file the state addendum) funding and contract opportunities.
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene lists the benefits of becoming M/WBE certified as gaining "Better bid access on city-funded contracts; Networking opportunities with government buyers; One-on-one procurement counseling and bid preparation assistance; [and] Free advertising in the online directory of certified businesses."
While obtaining your M/WBE certification does not ensure your successful acquisition of contracts, it does provide privileged access to opportunities and supportive resources to assist you in growing your business with the government.
