The first section of this post reflects the state's dashboard breakdown as of today,

May 25th.


The following sections dip into the Tracing protocols, Ongoing Monitoring, Mental Health, and Wellbeing, which are also sections of the guide and often overlooked.







NYC Monitoring

New Infections

M1: 14 Day Decline in Total Hospitalizations: GOAL MET as of 5/25

M2: 14 Day Decline in Deaths: GOAL MET as of 5/25

M3: New Hospitalizations are under 2 per 100K residents: GOAL MET as of 5/25



Healthcare Capacity

Diagnostic

Contact Tracing

Contact Tracing helps prevent the spread of COVID through 4 key steps.


NYS DOH together with Micahel Bloomberg and Johns Hopkins is working to recruit and train contact tracers. The program will operate THROUGH next flu season and will be coordinated with Connecticut and New Jersey.


The process:

  • Labs report positive tests to contact tracers on a daily basis via a state reporting system

  • Contact tracers interview patient to identify people they may have been in contact with over the past 14 days

  • Contact tracers will notify and interview each contact of the original positive individual to alert of to their risk and to isolate themselves for 14 days to prevent further spread.

  • Contact tracers monitor those contacts by text throughout the duration of their quarantine to see if they show symptoms.

Ongoing Monitoring


Once a phased re-opening begins, it is essential that the rate of transmission be carefully monitored and remain under control. Each region must appoint an oversight institution as its “control room” to monitor the regional infection rate during the phased reopening.


This team of local elected officials, as well as hospital and state representatives, will monitor the above metrics and other key indicators and can slow or shut off reopening if indicators are problematic. This team will also monitor business’ compliance with reopening guidelines and ensure that local officials are enforcing these rules when necessary.

In developing re-opening plans, businesses will need to consider 3 main factors:

  1. PROTECT YOUR EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS: which include adjusting workplace hours and shift the design to reduce density in the workplace and offices, enacting social distancing protocols, and restrict non-essential travel for employees.

  2. CHANGES TO THE PHYSICAL WORKSPACE (both onsite and offsite): which can include requiring all employees and customers to wear masks and implementing strict cleaning and sanitation standards

  3. IMPLEMENTING PROCESSES THAT MEET OUR CHANGING PUBLIC HEALTH OBLIGATIONS: this could (and should) mean screening individuals when they enter the workplace or reporting confirmed positives to customers and co-workers.


Local leaders should continue with their strategy of outreach and education to businesses that are not in compliance with guidelines. For continued or egregious non-compliance, local law enforcement is empowered to enforce the rules.





Mental Health and Wellbeing

Half of all Americans have said their mental health has been negatively impacted by the pandemic, and experts have measured a rise in drug and alcohol consumption. The anxiety, depression, insomnia, and loneliness is not going away soon.


The State has set up a mental health hotline ( 1-844-863-9314) and recruited thousands of mental health professionals to provide free counseling to anyone who needs it.


They also worked together with Headspace to offer free meditation and mindfulness content as a mental health resource for all of us as we cope with this unprecedented public health crisis. New Yorkers can access a collection of science-backed, evidence-based guided meditations, along with at-home mindful workouts, sleep exercises, and children’s content to help address rising stress and anxiety.


Leaders, like business owners, should speak to their anxieties, reminding each other that they are not alone, that things will get better, and that they should get the help they need.


Leaders are responsible for their people. Failing to do your part could mean employees get infected, bringing it home to their families, who will continue to spread it through their neighborhoods, potentially overwhelming hospitals or infecting health care workers.


That means to continue to use social distancing, requiring everyone to wear masks, onsite and offsite, and continuing to practice good hand hygiene or wearing gloves.
