POSITION: ICT (Initial Construction Training) Instructor

PRIMARY FUNCTION: CRAFT LABOR: Pre-Apprenticeship & Apprenticeship Skilled Labor

Experience:

  • Construction Work: 10 years + (Required)

  • Teaching: 2 years+ (Preferred)

Education:

  • High school or equivalent (Required)

  • Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)

License:

  • OSHA 30 (Required)

  • Site Safety Manager (Preferred)

Work authorization:

  • United States (Required)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with students who are studying for a Skilled Labor certification.

  • Plan lessons and assignments, adapting them as needed.

  • Work with colleagues to develop or modify the curriculum for our certificate programs involving a series of courses.

  • Assess students’ progress by grading papers, tests, and other work.

  • Advise students about which classes to take and how to achieve their goals.

  • Stay informed about changes and innovations in construction.

  • Conduct research and experiments to advance knowledge in construction.

  • Publish original research and analysis.

  • Serve on academic and administrative committees that review and recommend policies, make budget decisions, or advise on hiring and promotions within our organization.

  • Communication:. CMC instructors will contribute in and outside of the classroom. Writing papers, give lectures, collaborating, taking classes to hone skills and serve the greater community will be a fundamental part of our ideal candidate’s toolbox.

  • Critical-thinking skills: To challenge established theories and beliefs, conduct research, and design experiments, our candidate will have solidly developed critical-thinking skills.

  • Verbal skills: Our instructors need to be able to present information in a way that students will understand. They need to adapt to the different learning styles of their students and teach students who have little or no experience with the subject, along with a deep mistrust of the educational system.

  • Writing skills: CMC Instructors are verbal communicators, but must be able to assess and report on each student moving through our training program. Student Reports and Benchmark reporting area required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be able to stand, walk and lift up to 80% of the time.

  • Ability to operate a computer and software

  • Ability to operate all types and sizes of shop equipment, including hand and power tools.

  • The person in this position needs to move about inside the lab and classroom for up to 75% of the time. 25% will be offsite, reporting and development.

  • Constantly positions self to maintain equipment and teach students in the lab, including under around and over lab equipment.

  • The person in this position frequently communicates with students who have inquiries about their classes. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • Must be able to recognize and observe student and instructor needs within the classroom, lab and office settings.

  • The person will be reading and comprehending complex documents, emails and course material.

  • Required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds..

  • Constantly works in either indoor office or student lab conditions.

  • Must be able to work extended schedule required by job

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE:

  • 10+ years’ experience in construction

  • Management experience a plus.

  • Proficiency in Math.

  • Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills.

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite.

  • High School graduate with craft experience is required.

  • Enthusiasm for teaching required.

  • Required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Once you have been qualified to teach for CMC, you are obligated to also comply with the guidelines and responsibilities required of all CMC Employees, which are summarized below.

You should note and be aware of the fact that your salary includes payment for performance of these services; you are not being paid merely to “show up” each evening. You should also be aware that the governing board of CMC have approved these same requirements and your compliance with these obligations is one condition of your employment by CMC Workforce Development.

  • Instructors must behave in a professional manner at all times, both in the classroom and around the parameters of the CMC Training Facility, or any other host facility where they are instruction on behalf of CMC.

  • Instructors are expected to maintain discipline in their classes. All rules of the host facility are to be followed.

  • Instructors are required to enter and submit accurate information for required reports and forms.

  • Instructors must practice professional etiquette and dress.

  • Instructors must demonstrate good stewardship by setting an example for the care use of materials, tools, and equipment. This includes following all Tool Room policies and procedures for check-out and return.

  • Instructors must be ethical at all times.

  • Complete confidentiality is essential for an instructor. Grades/and/or trainee’s progress must not be discussed with anyone except the individual trainee or CMC Staff.

  • Instructors are responsible for test security. All tests must be submitted to the CMC office immediately upon completion of grading and reviewing.

  • Instructors should be in the classroom at least 10 minutes prior to the start of class.

  • Instructors are required to attend information meetings scheduled periodically by CMC or the governing Board of Directors. If an instructor is unable to attend these meetings, a reason must be given.

  • Administrative Reports. Each instructor is responsible for submitting the necessary reports on the designated deadline.

  • Attendance Report - Each class will be given a sign-in sheet. It is important to have the students be responsible to sign these for a backup as to their attendance in class. The attendance reports are an important tool for communicating quickly with the student's company. It is extremely important that these reports are submitted immediately. Do not hold attendance reports! If the reason is known for a student’s absence, please make a note on the attendance sheet. Note: All absences require a reason listed for each absence. If there is no excuse given, please document on attendance sheet.

  • Reporting Teaching Time - Each class is allocated to different community based organization and instructors are responsible for reporting in and out.

  • Grade Reporting - It is important to turn in module and/or chapter test on a weekly basis. Do not hold test or performance profiles!
